OTT Throttle Response Options Explained: Lite Minus to Super Spicy
If you've started the process of researching the OTT tune, you've probably had the same question every customer has: you begin to dive deeper and see six names regularly. Lite Minus, Lite, Mild, Medium, Spicy, and Super Spicy, and have no idea what they mean. We get asked "which one should I pick" more than almost any other question during a tuning consultation, or appointment. So let's break it down, no more guessing required.
First, the one thing you need to know before you pick anything

Here's the part people assume wrong the most: the throttle response option you pick does not change your horsepower or torque, and it doesn't change the shifting either. Every one of those, Lite Minus through Super Spicy, gets the same power and the same transmission calibration improvements from the OTT tune. What changes between them is purely how the pedal talks to the engine. Think of it as the sensitivity dial on your accelerator, not a power dial.
That matters because we'd rather you pick the right feel for how you actually drive than pick "Spicy" because it sounds like the fast one. It's not more powerful. It's just more snappy the first few feet off the line.
What "throttle response" actually means

Your gas pedal doesn't have a direct mechanical link to the throttle body anymore, it's drive-by-wire. That means your ECU decides how much throttle to actually give you based on how far and how fast you press the pedal. Factory calibrations from Toyota are tuned conservative, so there's a noticeable delay between "I pressed the pedal" and "the truck actually moved." OTT's throttle response options change that mapping, how quickly and how aggressively the truck responds to your foot.
The six options, broken down

Lite Minus
This one is basically a stock throttle profile. If you want the OTT tune's other improvements (better shift logic, increased power) without changing how the pedal feels at all, this is your setting. Nothing to relearn. The truck will still respond with the same feeling in the gas pedal as it did when you showed up for your tuning appointment, but will shift according to the tune.
Lite
Just a hair or two above stock. You'll notice it's a little quicker to respond, but it's subtle enough that you aren't suprised when you hit the gas pedal. This is a great option for those who wheel their truck pretty hard. It allows you to still feather the throttle in those tight spots. This is also a great option for someone who's looking for just a little more throttle response, but don’t feel like they need too much.
Mild
This is where it starts to feel like an actual upgrade. Mild is noticeably more responsive than what you're used to daily driving a stock Toyota, but it's not overbearing and it's not underwhelming either. It's the sweet spot for most people, and it's what we personally recommend as the starting point if you're not sure where you'll land.
Medium
This setting is where things start to get really responsive. With medium being a step up from Mild, the truck takes off noticeably quicker off the line and the pedal feels a lot more alive. If Mild felt good but you want more urgency, this is the next stop.
Spicy
Second from the top, and it earns the name. Spicy is extremely responsive, to the point where it feels touchy on the pedal. You'll need a light foot in stop-and-go traffic until you're used to it. The drivers that enjoy this are normally not off-roading their vehicle, and enjoy taking off quickly. Every time.
Super Spicy
The most responsive option on the list. Tap the pedal and the truck is ready before you are. This is for the driver who wants maximum immediacy and doesn't mind a hair-trigger pedal to get it. This option normally gets changed to something lower after driving the truck for a week haha.
Bonus: you can have two throttle feels in one truck

Here's one a lot of people don't realize is even on the table. If your truck has an ECT PWR button or a TOW/HAUL button, we can set your OTT tune so that button gives you a second throttle response option.
Here's how it works: when you first start the truck, it defaults to whichever throttle option you picked as your everyday setting. Press your ECT PWR or TOW/HAUL button, and the truck switches over to a second throttle response option you picked separately. Keep in mind, you will only notice a difference in the two from a dead stop. It will still work if you push it while driving, but you'll notice the throttle response change when you stop and take off again.
Most people set the button up to jump to something spicier than what they run day to day, so you've got your mellow, easy-to-live-with feel most of the time, and a quicker, more aggressive pedal on tap whenever you actually want it.
The button still does everything it normally does too, we're not taking away any of its factory functions. It just gets that extra throttle switch layered on top, so the end result feels kind of like a built-in sport mode.
If you want the best of both worlds instead of committing to just one setting, ask your tuner about this during your appointment.
So which one should you actually pick?

There's no wrong answer here, it comes down to how you drive and what you want the truck to feel like under your foot. A few starting points:
- Daily driver who wants the OTT improvements without a major increased response in the pedal: Lite Minus or Lite.
- Not sure where you'll land: start with Mild. It's the most common recommendation for a reason, it's a real upgrade without being a handful.
- Want the truck to take off with a light tap: Medium.
- You know you want maximum responsiveness and you're okay with a sensitive pedal: Spicy or Super Spicy.
You can always start conservative and go spicier later, but you generally can't un-learn a touchy pedal in traffic, so if you're on the fence, go with the milder option first.
This applies across the Toyota lineup (for the most part)

OTT tunes the whole Toyota lineup, so if you're in anything other than a new 2.4T engine, these same throttle response options are available as part of your OTT tune. The new 2.4T engines are set a little differently. We'll cover that in its own article.
